The equipment has to
be chosen very carefully to withstand the rigours of such an extreme journey.
All
equipment has either been previously tested by Conrad and Richard or designed
for the expedition.
SKIS
The skis were manufactured especially for the expedition by FISCHER. They
were based on the production line model EUROPA 99, with an especially
strengthened core.
SNOWSHOES
During training Richard and Conrad discovered that snowshoes were better than skies in the rough ice. They made the last minute bold move to attempt their journey using ONLY snow shoes, as opposed to skies. They tested and took with them the GV snowshoe Polar Trail model. They used the snow shoe every day and they undoubtedly proved their worth in the rough ice.
RUCKSACKS
Extra large rucksacks (100 litres) have been made by KARRIMOR to accommodate
the huge loads the team have to carry.
SLEEPING BAGS
The team will take 3 sleeping bags each, to withstand the extreme cold
and also use a vapour barrier liner, to prevent body moisture penetrating
the bag. Despite this precaution, ice will still form in the outer bag
and diminish insulation. The outer bag will be useless after 2-3 weeks
and weigh an extra 4-5 kilo.
TENT
The tent is a custom made design by Richard, Misha and Josee to minimise
the size/weight ratio. The skis will be used as a centre support and ski
poles will hold up the perimeter of the tent, avoiding the need for extra
poles.
CLOTHES
Clothing is based on the layer principle, with a warm ‘wicking‘
layer next to the skin to disperse sweat, then 2-3 outer layers for insulation.
A variety of hats, socks
and gloves are taken and the final outer layer is a wind proof, breathable,
custom-made suit.
BOOTS/BINDINGS
The team will use custom made Russian bindings and boots designed by Richard
and Misha in conjunction with a Canadian company (Hichaud). See the SPONSORS
page for a full list of suppliers who assisted the expedition.
FUR
The outer jackets will use a wolverine fur ruff to create a “warm
space” around the face and prevent frost forming
SLEDGES
The sledges, again specifically made for the expedition, have a revolutionary
lid so they can still be dragged when they flip over.
