Over the centuries many have tried to claim the prize of the North Pole ……….. many have failed.

FREDERICK COOK

On 21 April 1908 the American Frederick Cook claimed to have reached the North Pole, but this claim has largely been dismissed and he was publicly branded by the press as a liar and a cheat

ROBERT PEARY

On 6 April 1909 the legendary Admiral Robert Peary stated he had reached the North Pole on his fourth attempt. Although his claim was endorsed by Congress, the navigation evidence was thin and much doubt surrounds his claim

WALLY HERBERT

Without doubt the first surface crossing of the Arctic Ocean was led by Wally Herbert in 1969. This dogsled expedition, with air support, crossed from Alaska to Svalbard passing the North Pole (6 April 1969) on the way. At the time it did not get the recognition it deserved as a truly epic journey.

WILL STEGER

The first unsupported expedition to the North Pole (using 10 dogs) was achieved in 1986 by Will Steger. Richard was a member of that expedition.

BORGE OUSLAND

The first solo, truly unsupported expedition to reach the Pole was achieved on 21 April 1994 by the legendary Norwegian Borge Ousland.

WEBER/MALAKHOV

Only one expedition has ever skied to the Pole and BACK and that was when Richard Weber teamed up with the legendary Russian Misha Malakhov in 1995.

LARSEN/GJELDNES

Finally in 2000 the Norwegians Larsen and Gjeldnes completed the first unsupported crossing from Russian to Canada which is recorded in their book ‘Dead Men Walking’. This was a seriously epic expedition. Rune Gjeldnes aims to cross Antarctica solo in 2005/2006 (4,600kms).

To date only 10 people have skied unsupported to the North Pole.
Conrad and Richard will try to make that 12!
